Building the ‘Business Model Canvas’ with Fronteer Strategy
juli 20, 2010
Two weeks ago, Paul and me participated in an inspiring session organized by the remarkable masters of co-creation: Fronteer Strategy. This get-together was a first try-out of their new Business Modeling workshop. In this try-out, business people, entrepreneurs and people with ideas that challenge the status quo, came together to co-create their business model canvas.

This was a great challenge, a bit scary to work with complete strangers at first, but worthwhile the open attitude as it gives back a wealth of information and feedback about your idea and plans. The first part of the day the concept of the Business Model Canvas was introduced by @szwerink, a method that is described in the book called Business Model Generation written by @business_design (Alex Osterwalder) and others.
In my last post I wrote about ‘why we do what we do‘ and the first steps to identify our drive to even begin with such a challenging internet project. We did not really know yet what we were going to offer, to who and with whom but we did know why we were doing it. Because we believe our health is primarily our own responsibility and we all can get healthier or less ill if we actively participate in our own health.
During the business modeling session we took the ‘why‘ and started thinking about who are we bringing together and what are we going to make easier for them? In answering this question, I have been inspired by Seth Godin very much who talks about the necessity to challenge the status quo and form tribes of people who are believers.Check out what Seth has to say in his TED talk “On the Tribes we lead”. I am curious to learn if he inspires you as much as he inspired me.
Seth also talks about the people you are going to upset when you challenge the status quo. Clearly by allowing people to log health related outcomes, set goals and form their own health team by inviting people that support them getting healthier, we for sure will get a lot of questions and frowns from medical professionals. On the other hand, we have developed some great ideas for tools that will make their life easier too. If I were a doctor or a nurse, I would love to help develop them. So: are you a progressive doctors or nurse, is it your personal mission to make a difference in peoples lives everyday and do you want to challenge the status quo with us? Please let me know via commenting on this post or sending me a message.
By means of this post I would like to spread the word about the cool workshops that Fronteer Strategy has developed, in particular those related to Business Modeling. It can help you entrepreneurs, young start ups or established businesses to get clear why you are doing what you do, who you are connecting and what you are solving for your tribe. I have really enjoyed this session which gave us a lot of fuel to continue with designing the first draft of our social interface and design the architecture. So, big thanks to @szwerink and @martijnptr from Fronteer Strategy for inviting us and give us the opportunity to get started with a solid business model.
